A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - I am thrilled to introduce this collection of (mainly) photographs on Iceland, a land of profound artistic inspiration. The Icelandic landscape—characterized by glaciers, volcanoes, and dramatic, primal geological forces—symbolically represents the sublime, the resilience of nature, and the raw, untamed essence of the Earth. Psychologically, it evokes a sense of solitude, vastness, and awe. Since the mid-20th century, Iceland has been a powerful subject for photography. The American photographer Eliot Porter is a notable figure who focused on the country, famously utilizing the rich hues of color photography to capture the intense, intimate details of the landscape in works such as Moss, Waterfall, Cinders, Near Mt. Hekla, Iceland (1972). Porter elevated the vibrant details of moss, lichen, and geothermal features, pioneering a shift from the grand scale toward an ecological intimacy. Another world-famous photographer is the contemporary Icelander Ragnar Axelsson (RAX), globally renowned for his compelling, stark portrayals of the environment and its people, especially in his series Faces of the North. This collection highlights how emerging photographers continue to interpret Iceland's unique geology and light, bridging epic natural history with personal contemporary vision.
