Liminal spaces - curated by Raffaella Nobili

A curation by Raffaella Nobili, Owner and curator at Paraventi Giapponesi - My idea stems from the concept of physically crossing space, where, at a certain point, one feels like they've crossed a threshold and entered a different perceptual space. Crossing the limes, the boundary, leads us into another territory, where certainties are subverted and we enter a new field of conquest, where the self undergoes a redefinition through a perceptual short circuit. The selected works demonstrate the very essence of liminality: some represent the physical space in which change occurs, others the indefiniteness of thought from which a new awareness arises. Liminal space concerns not only physical space, but also the suspension or shifting perception of time, which is no longer merely physical and measurable, but an internal, dilated, and suspended time where changes occur silently. Some visual works seem to evoke a musical interlude: a rarefied boundary we enter to experience, without being able to foresee, the transformative outcome of the journey undertaken. Both sonic and visual space sometimes appear as foreign lands to be crossed, simultaneously non-places and thresholds.
