Locus amoenus. The harmonious landscape - curated by Raffaella Nobili

A curation by Raffaella Nobili, Owner and curator at Paraventi Giapponesi - Locus amoenus refers to an ideal place of serenity immersed in perfect nature, not a tyrant but, on the contrary, welcoming and protective: a space far from urban chaos and modern frenzy, where the classical values of beauty and harmony survive. It is a recurring literary trope, spanning the centuries: from Homer—with Ulysses' landing on Calypso's island—to Virgil's Bucolics, Ovid, Dante, and Petrarch, all the way to modern literature. But it is also a recurring theme in the figurative arts, especially in landscape painting. From the idealized Arcadian landscapes of the seventeenth century, with Claude Lorrain and Gaspard Dughet, to the imaginative and theatrical visions of Hubert Robert, nature is represented as a harmonious space, a place of suspended time and inner gaze. The selection presented here brings together works that are diverse in style and technique, yet united by a common, peaceful vision of nature: it does not threaten, but welcomes; it is not external to man, but participates in his feelings. Each image chosen for this collection reflects a sweetness of the landscape profile that soothes the soul, suggesting a space in which the conscience calms and harmonizes.
