A curation by Raffaella Nobili, Owner and curator at Paraventi Giapponesi - The selection of works revolves around the iconic power of manga (漫画), hand-drawn "whimsical images," and anime (アニメ), the animated form of manga and graphic design, reinterpreted transculturally and capable of shaping generations, enduring in the global imagination. From Hokusai's original "manga" to the figures of Grendizer, Sailor Moon, and Goku, Japanese comics have crossed cultural boundaries, establishing themselves as a shared visual language. As Roland Barthes reminds us, modern myth arises from the transformation of existing signs, in this case images, which are re-semanticized. Characters become universal, everyday symbols, adaptable to changing contexts. In this sense, the reflections of Marshall McLuhan (the medium is the message) and WJT Mitchell on the image as a living entity clarify its persuasive power and its ability to transcend cultural barriers, becoming a transnational phenomenon and a hybridized and transversal popular culture.
This curation represents the first chapter of a larger work, structured as a trilogy, which continues with Comix and will be completed with Cyber.
