Mr. Plum - curated by Flavio Scaloni

A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - The plum, or more generally the stone fruit, is a surprisingly rich subject full of meanings and serves as a powerful source of artistic inspiration, deserving exploration in a contemporary collection. Symbolically, the plum is associated with fertility, longevity, and renewal in many Eastern cultures, while its juicy pulp and hidden pit can suggest a psychological connotation tied to vulnerability and concealed desire. Its simple yet perfect form and the transience of its ripening make it an effective metaphor for time and ephemeral beauty. In Art History, especially from the 20th and 21st centuries, still life has been transformed, and the plum has appeared in non-purely figurative contexts. Among post-1950 artists, though not a subject as dominant as the apple or the banana, the plum has been used for its color composition and shape. While there is no single universally "iconic" post-1950 artwork titled just "The Plum" by a world-famous artist, the world-renowned photographer Irving Penn often included fruits and vegetables in his minimalist still life studies, exploring their texture and form. His photographs, such as the still life series, offer a reference point for the modern, isolated treatment of simple objects.
