Museums in Photography - curated by Flavio Scaloni

A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - I'm excited to present a photographic series focused on "Museum Spaces," exploring the gallery itself as a subject. This theme is profoundly inspiring because the museum space is a stage for cultural memory, architecture, and the ritual of viewing. Symbolically, it represents the intersection of the past and present, often carrying a psychological weight of reverence and introspection. Since 1950, photographers have increasingly turned their lenses on institutional critique and the nature of display. A notable example is Thomas Struth's highly influential series, Museum Photographs (begun 1989), which meticulously documents viewers and architecture within major galleries. Earlier, figures like Garry Winogrand (Public Relations series, 1970s) captured the unscripted theater of museum crowds. Contemporary photographers, such as the mentioned Stefan Draschan, continue this dialogue, often playing with visual echoes and serendipitous color matching between art and audience. This selection captures the beauty, architecture, and often unnoticed poetry within these hallowed halls.
