The American surf boom was immortalized in music by The Beach Boys and in cult films like Big Wednesday (1978). While many artists have captured the scene, the Scottish painter Peter Doig evokes the existential solitude of the figure in water with works like Surfer (2001), blending personal memory with cinematic imagery.
