Psychologically, bridges represent overcoming obstacles, moving from one state of being to another, or bridging divides—be they physical, cultural, or emotional. Symbolically, they connect the known and the unknown, representing a passage, a link between worlds, and often, destiny or hope. In Art History, especially from the mid-20th century forward, the bridge has been rendered through abstraction and documentary focus. Post-1950, many artists captured the bridge as a powerful structure reflecting industrial might and urban complexity. The theme is frequently explored in the work of Pop and Photorealist artists. For instance, Richard Estes, known for his hyperrealistic urban scenes, often featured bridges in his complex city reflections, such as his painting Brooklyn Bridge (1983). Sculptor Christo and Jeanne-Claude famously realized a massive temporary installation, The Pont Neuf Wrapped, Paris, 1975–85, transforming an ancient bridge into a monumental fabric sculpture, redefining the structure as an object of pure art.
