A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - The theme of the Map is a rich source of artistic inspiration because it represents the fundamental human need to organize, visualize, and understand territory, history, and power. Maps are inherently symbolic, embodying concepts of knowledge, control, borders, identity, and the distance between places. Psychologically, they appeal to our desire for clarity, acting as a visual metaphor for personal paths, memory, and the frameworks we use to navigate life. The use of maps intensified in contemporary art from the mid-20th century as artists challenged rigid boundaries. Jasper Johns famously elevated the map from functional object to artistic subject with his oil painting Map (1961), transforming a familiar image into a meditation on representation. In conceptual art, Alighiero Boetti created his Mappa series of embroidered world maps (1971–1994) to reflect on global politics and collaborative creation. The world-famous photographer Ansel Adams captured the vast, mapped-out terrain of the American West with scientific precision and emotional depth in his iconic black-and-white photography, such as The Tetons and the Snake River (1942). This collection explores how today's artists utilize the map to chart personal and global narratives.
