Thresholds. The space of waiting - curated by Raffaella Nobili

A curation by Raffaella Nobili, Owner and curator at Paraventi Giapponesi - Doors, gates, and openings are elements that define human space, archetypal symbols of passage and change. Every threshold is a point of transition, a subtle boundary between the known and the unknown. Crossing it means accepting the possibility of transformation and grappling with the mystery that looms before us. The threshold is an ambivalent sign: a boundary of containment or an invitation to cross, a barrier and a passage, both an end and a beginning. In Japanese thought, the concept of 間 (ma) is an aesthetic and philosophical value that defines the intermediate space, the living void that separates and unites, the expectation that precedes the gesture, the silence that gives meaning to sound. John Cage interprets it in contemporary music as a legacy of Japanese tradition, transforming silence into a form of active listening. The threshold is a space filled with expectation, the place where being prepares to change. The selected works interpret the threshold as a metaphor for passage, risk, and rebirth. The moment in which one remains suspended between the inside and the outside, the light and the shadow, is perhaps the one in which the vision becomes clearest.
