Waterfalls - curated by Flavio Scaloni

A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - Waterfalls are an enthralling theme, embodying the raw, sublime power of nature and the ceaseless flow of energy. They inspire artists because they visually represent both motion and permanence—the water changes, but the cascade remains. Symbolically, a waterfall signifies release, purification, and the psychological concept of uncontrolled emotion or the sheer, unstoppable force of destiny. In art, the theme has evolved from Romantic landscape grandeur to contemporary conceptual engagement. Post-1950, artists often explore the waterfall's dynamic force. Olafur Eliasson engaged with this theme on a monumental scale with his urban installation The New York City Waterfalls (2008), transforming the natural wonder into a commentary on urban infrastructure and spectacle. The world-famous photographer Ansel Adams, renowned for his stunning black-and-white landscapes, frequently captured the ephemeral mist and powerful rush of falls in Yosemite, such as in his iconic photograph Merced River, Cliffs, Waterfalls, Yosemite Valley (c. 1950s), treating them as majestic, timeless studies of light and water. This collection captures the mesmerizing beauty and power of the waterfall motif.
