Anatoliy Anshin woont al meer dan 20 jaar in Japan. Hij promoveerde in de premoderne Japanse geschiedenis en publiceerde een aantal wetenschappelijke artikelen en een monografie over dit onderwerp. Hij werd ook docent Japanse zwaardvechtkunst, Kendo. Vrij laat in zijn leven begon hij de Japanse natuur en historische locaties vast te leggen met behulp van kunstfotografie.
Anshins foto's zijn niet gefocust op stereotype exotische objecten, en ook niet op het vastleggen van Japanse dingen, hoe mooi ze er ook uitzien. Ze zijn gericht op het visualiseren en hernieuwen van de spiritualiteit van de oude cultuur, die, hoewel vaak afwezig in het moderne dagelijks leven, nog steeds toegankelijk is als we ons hart en onze geest openstellen. Hij hoopt dat zijn beelden als bakens zullen dienen voor dit rijke en betekenisvolle culturele erfgoed.
