Nja Mahdaoui, een belangrijke figuur in de moderne Arabische kunst, is een multimediakunstenaar.
Internationaal erkend en bekend als de 'choreograaf van de letters', speelde hij een baanbrekende rol in de ontwikkeling van kalligrafische abstractie. Diep geworteld in de Arabisch-islamitische cultuur, overstijgt Mahdaoui de Arabische kalligrafie en transformeert deze tot een visuele en abstracte hedendaagse kunstvorm, waarmee hij een universeel platform creëert voor interculturele dialoog en gedeeld bewustzijn. Door zijn kalligrafische taal voortdurend uit te breiden, stelde zijn unieke benadering hem in staat de intrinsieke, oneindige esthetische kwaliteiten van Arabische letters tot uitdrukking te brengen en blijft hij generaties kunstenaars inspireren.
Mahdaoui's onvermoeibare passie voor onderzoek, die al meer dan zes decennia duurt, heeft hem ertoe aangezet te experimenteren met een buitengewoon scala aan media, van werken op perkament en canvas tot grootschalige installaties in belangrijke openbare ruimtes. Zijn werk is tentoongesteld in prestigieuze instellingen en is vertegenwoordigd in tal van particuliere en openbare collecties.
