Sonia Costa is een Italiaanse fotografe wiens artistieke praktijk gevormd wordt door haar achtergrond in de geografie en een leven vol reizen door afgelegen gebieden over de hele wereld. Haar werk onderzoekt de stille waardigheid van mensen en plaatsen ver van de schijnwerpers, waar het dagelijks leven zich zonder spektakel ontvouwt. Geïnspireerd door de humanistische fotografie van de 20e eeuw, beweegt ze zich tussen documentaire en fotojournalistiek en ontwikkelt ze langlopende, op series gebaseerde projecten die geworteld zijn in tijd, observatie en menselijke verbondenheid. Ze benadert haar onderwerpen met geduld en respect en gebruikt de camera als een instrument van aanwezigheid in plaats van opdringerigheid. Ze werkt zowel in zwart-wit als in kleur en focust op subtiele gebaren die emotionele diepte onthullen en uitnodigen tot een langzamere, meer aandachtige manier van kijken. Haar internationaal bekroonde foto's zijn gepubliceerd in boeken en tijdschriften en tentoongesteld in solotentoonstellingen in Italië en in groepstentoonstellingen in de Verenigde Staten, Spanje, Italië, Griekenland en Japan.
