'Portrait' is painted on an antique wooden panel, presenting the image of a young man rendered with both immediacy and restraint. The head turned slightly away from the viewer, with a sense of introspection and quiet distance. Warm earthy tones dominate the body and background, while subtle accents of blue, pink, and ochre animate the surface. The subject’s hands are held close to the chest, reinforcing a feeling of vulnerability and inward focus.…
Broad strokes, thin washes, and textured patches of paint coexist on the panel, revealing traces of my earlier gestures. This accumulation of marks gives the portrait a tactile quality, as if the material itself participates in shaping the figure. By interrupting the clarity of the subject’s face and body, I introduce a subtle barrier that both draws the viewer closer and keeps the figure slightly out of reach.

Dick van Dijk is een Amsterdamse kunstenaar die tekent en schildert. Zijn werk is geïnspireerd door de mannelijke figuur en balanceert tussen controle en intuïtie. Dick vergelijkt zijn proces met collage, het componeren, modificeren, deconstrueren en reconstrueren van menselijke vormen in lagen verf en kleur. Schilderkunstige ontdekkingen tijdens het werkproces creëren nieuwe elementen en dynamiek. Daarbij zoekt hij naar een dualiteit tussen herkenbare vormen en minder uitgewerkte delen om een levendig beeld te creëren. In sommige werken zijn (delen van) figuren verborgen, terwijl in andere werken lichamen verschijnen, visuele aanwijzingen voor wat er wel of niet is.
Het resultaat zijn lichamelijke vormen die gelaagde verhalen over vrijheid en intimiteit vertellen, dicht op de huid en bekeken door de lens van herinnering en verwachting.
