With ICONIC, I explore the question of when an image, a figure or a symbol becomes an icon.
The idea of the “iconic” fascinates me as an artist. To me, an icon is more than something recognizable. It emerges when a form transcends its representation and develops a presence of its own – when it remains in our memory and becomes a symbol for something greater.
The owl forms the centre of this work. Its large, almost hypnotic eyes confront the viewer… directly, while I have transformed its natural appearance into geometric fields, lines and ornamental structures. The figure therefore moves between representation and abstraction, between a familiar creature and an autonomous visual symbol.
The materiality of the painting is particularly important to me. I incorporated oxidizing silver, allowing the surface to continue reacting and changing after the work was completed. This transformation was intentional: I did not want the painting to remain entirely static. Depending on the light and v
