Italian Conceptual artist Alighiero Boetti famously collaborated with Afghan artisans on his embroidered maps and word squares, like Mappa (started 1971), turning the carpet into a canvas for geopolitical and linguistic exploration. Post-Minimalist artist Robert Morris utilized scraps of felt and industrial carpeting in his installations to challenge notions of preciousness. Artist Mona Hatoum (b. 1952), whose work spans sculpture and installation, used the medium for unsettling effect in pieces like Doormat II (1998), crafted from stainless steel pins.
