Una curatela di Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager presso Galerie Lo Scalo – The theme of The Market—be it food, fish, or street—is a perpetually rich subject for art, symbolizing the vibrant nexus of community, commerce, and human exchange. It's associated with abundance, fleeting moments, and the visceral reality of daily life. Psychologically, the market represents the organized chaos of society and the energy of collective experience. In Art History, market scenes were popular in genre painting, but after 1950, artists used the motif to critique and capture the modern economy. Prior to that, painter Maurice Utrillo (1883–1955) captured scenes of Parisian life, including the atmosphere of local street commerce, in works such as Le marché à Montmartre (1924), providing a more traditional, figurative link. Later, the photographer Philip-Lorca diCorcia has used the street market as a setting for his highly staged, cinematic photography that explores alienation within public space, notably in his series Odessa, 1996. The world-famous photographer Graciela Iturbide masterfully captured the market's social and cultural weight, with iconic series like her photographs of the Zapotec women of Juchitán, such as Nuestra Señora de las Iguanas (Our Lady of the Iguanas) (1979). This collection highlights contemporary interpretations of the market.
