Latent Heat
from the series Temperature Cycle II – Atmospheric Identity
Latent Heat investigates identity as a thermal condition held in suspension. The diptych constructs a shared atmospheric field in which the figure and the landscape operate as parallel states of energy. The portrait appears partially dissolved within a luminous chromatic structure, while the landscape condenses density and mass.
Rather than depicting emotion, the work articulates… a transitional state — a moment in which energy is absorbed but not yet released. Borrowed from thermodynamics, the notion of latent heat describes the invisible force contained within transformation. In this context, identity becomes a permeable system, shaped by atmospheric pressure, chromatic density, and the subtle exchange between interior and exterior climates.

Annika Dzerve (b. 1987, Riga, Latvia) is a visual artist whose work explores the meeting point between emotion and atmosphere. She holds a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from the Art Academy of Latvia and participated in an Erasmus program in Lecce, Italy.
Dzerve now lives and works in the countryside near Oria, in southern Italy, where daily life close to nature informs her sensitivity to light, weather, and subtle shifts in mood. Her recent series investigates “internal climates” through diptychs that pair female presences with atmospheric, abstracted fields of color.
