Butterfly Matrix — Helen She
Butterfly Matrix is an original oil painting by Helen She, where the visual language of the digital world is recreated entirely by hand.
The idea was born from a conversation with my children, who have been playing Minecraft for many years. One day they asked me a simple question: “Why are there no butterflies?”
Butterflies have long been one of the recurring subjects in my art, while my Matrix works explore images… constructed from hundreds of small geometric elements. I decided to bring these two worlds together.
The butterfly is composed of hundreds of individual squares, each painted by hand in oil directly onto the canvas. No stencil, template or digital transfer was used. Every mark was placed individually, allowing variations of green, turquoise and yellow to gradually form the image.
This process is important to the work: although the painting evokes pixels and the visual language of a digital world, its creation is completely physical.
