Since 1950, artists have investigated the mask as a conceptual critique. Saul Steinberg famously used mundane materials to create his biting Mask Series (1958-1962), revealing the absurdity of social disguises. In painting, Jean-Michel Basquiat referenced neo-expressionist structures reminiscent of ancestral masks in works like Untitled (1981) to explore heritage and trauma. In photography, the world-famous Cindy Sherman transformed the mask into a medium of critique; her prosthetic-heavy works, such as Untitled #282 (1993), challenge the stability of identity.
