Interiors - curated by Flavio Scaloni

A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - Interiors have long served as a powerful lens through which to explore the human condition, acting as a stage for our most intimate stories. This theme is deeply associated with solitude, privacy, and personal reflection, turning a physical space into a psychological landscape. A room can be a sanctuary or a prison, a site of everyday routine or profound emotional drama. The objects within these spaces—a chair, a window, a book—are imbued with symbolism, revealing clues about the lives of those who inhabit them. Since 1950, the theme has been revisited by many contemporary artists and photographers. The photographer Candida Höfer is renowned for her large-format photographs of public and semi-public interiors, such as libraries and museums, which are devoid of people but are rich with the sense of human presence and history. Her series Libraries (2000-present) highlights the grandeur and quiet dignity of these spaces. The American photographer Jeff Wall also explores the interior in a cinematic and psychological way, often staging elaborate scenes in domestic spaces that feel both familiar and uncanny. His work After "Invisible Man" by Ralph Ellison, the Preface (1999–2000) is a meticulously constructed interior that speaks to themes of alienation and identity.
