On the road - curated by Flavio Scaloni

A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - The theme of “The Road” is a powerful, persistent source of artistic inspiration, primarily because it symbolizes freedom, journey, escape, self-discovery, and the relentless passage of time. Psychologically, the road trip represents a modern quest, often associated with a search for identity or a rejection of established norms. The symbolism is rooted in the linear narrative of life and the allure of the horizon. This motif gained immense cultural gravity post-1950, deeply influenced by Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road (1957). In Art History, the road became a contemporary subject. Ed Ruscha famously explored car culture in his photobook Twentysix Gasoline Stations (1963). A notable painting is Robert Frank's oil and collage piece, The Americans - Route 66, Arizona (1955-56), which distils the desolate, cinematic feel of the quintessential American road trip. The world-famous photographer Lee Friedlander extensively documented the American social landscape from his car, notably framing the highway through the windshield. This collection showcases how emerging artists interpret the road as both a literal passage and a profound existential metaphor.
