The Colors of Winter - curated by Erica Sanfratello

A curation by Erica Sanfratello, at - Winter is often understood as a season of absence, a thinning of color and light. This selection pushes back against that reading, approaching winter as a moment of heightened perception rather than reduction. Across painting and photography, the works gathered here explore a restrained yet resonant palette: icy blues that hover close to silence, soft neutrals that absorb the gaze instead of returning it, deep shadows that seem to slow time, and atmospheric tones in which form gradually gives way to mood. These works do not depict winter as a literal landscape or narrative. Instead, they engage it as an optical and emotional condition. Color functions as temperature. Light appears tentative, almost cautious. Surfaces may seem muted at first, but they are never inert. In several pieces, near-monochrome compositions create space for slowness and sustained attention, where minimal shifts in hue or texture carry unexpected weight. Elsewhere, darkness operates not as a lack, but as a structuring element, shaping the image and encouraging prolonged looking.
