James Hawkins réside dans les pittoresques Highlands écossais et se décrit comme un romantique du 21e siècle. Il croit que l'exposition au sublime élève l'esprit humain et nous reconnecte au monde vivant, c'est pourquoi Hawkins passe autant de temps à l'extérieur que possible. Le paysagiste primé réalise des croquis et prend des photos lors de ses promenades quotidiennes, qu'il transfère ensuite sur toile à l'aide d'un projecteur. Hawkins peint à l'acrylique à l'aide de couteaux, de pinceaux et de ruban adhésif.
