Rooted in the legacies of Art Brut and Arte Povera, post-1950 artists abandoned polished finishes to elevate elemental substance. Jannis Kounellis championed this philosophy by contrasting raw iron and organic debris in works like Untitled (1969). Later, Richard Serra transformed massive industrial steel into immersive spatial encounters through his monumental sculpture The Matter of Time (2005). In photography, the world-famous Ugo Mulas captured the dynamic interaction between raw metal, space, and artist hands in his legendary documentary series David Smith in Voltri (1962).
