Spirali – a cura di Flavio Scaloni

Una curatela di Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager presso Galerie Lo Scalo – The spiral is an ancient and powerful symbol, embodying infinity, evolution, and the cyclical nature of time. Unlike the static circle, the spiral suggests dynamic movement—a journey inward toward the self or outward toward the cosmos. It inspires artists because it beautifully reflects natural forms, from galaxies to seashells. Psychologically, it often represents growth, expansion, and the mystery of the universe unfolding. In 20th-century and contemporary art, the spiral has been extensively explored as a universal form. The artist most famously associated with this motif is Robert Smithson, whose seminal Land Art piece, Spiral Jetty (1970), physically manifests this concept on a monumental scale. The work intertwines art with natural processes and time. Sculptor Louise Bourgeois also frequently used spiralling forms to explore themes of anxiety and memory. The world-famous photographer Man Ray, a key Surrealist figure, often utilized the spiral motif, though the form's hypnotic power is also seen in architectural photography. The contemporary photographer Gursky, though known for large-scale views, sometimes captures the visual pull of spiralling human-made structures, emphasizing pattern and scale. This collection celebrates the profound and enduring geometry of the spiral.
