Writing Art - Text on Canvas – a cura di Flavio Scaloni

Una curatela di Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager presso Galerie Lo Scalo – Writing inspires artists because it is the fundamental bridge between thought and permanence, simultaneously representing communication, memory, history, and identity. Symbolically, the written word holds the power of a decree or revelation, and psychologically, it represents the structure of language and the articulation of the unconscious mind. The incorporation of text into visual art exploded from the mid-20th century, becoming central to Conceptual Art and Pop Art. Post-1950, Jasper Johns famously used stenciled text and numbers to question representation, as seen in works like "Figure 5" (1960), treating the word as a visual object. Text also became an essential element of expression for artists like Cy Twombly, whose lyrical, scribbled canvases blur the line between drawing and writing. For a world-famous photographer, Robert Frank often incorporated handwritten or stamped text directly onto his prints to lend his social commentary a raw, personal, and diaristic urgency. Our emerging artists now explore this theme using calligraphy, fragmented text, and visual poetry to investigate everything from ancient scripts to digital communication.
