This photograph documents an artwork that does not exist. What appears to be a mounted object—suggested by brackets, shadows, and institutional lighting—is in fact an empty wall. The absent artwork is deliberate: a construction of expectation shaped by the language of museums, display systems, and belief in authority.
By photographing this staged absence, the image becomes the artwork itself, collapsing the distinction between object, documentation,… and fiction. The viewer is invited to complete the work mentally, projecting meaning onto what is not there.
Museum Without an Object questions authenticity, value, and authorship in contemporary art. It treats the museum not as a neutral container, but as an active producer of meaning—capable of transforming nothing into something, and documentation into truth. Frank Verreyken, opgeleid als fotograaf aan de Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen, kanaliseert zijn achtergrond op krachtige wijze in zowel schilderkunst als fotografie. Hij combineert meesterlijk conceptuele, abstracte en figuratieve stijlen, waarbij hij steeds heterogene methoden en innovatieve benaderingen omarmt.
