About this artwork
Pera’s oils are traversed by a fascination with academic drawing – one that relies on the (male) instruments of rationality and formal rigour - in the portrayal of classical sculptures, and in the investigation into the behaviour of light on reflective surfaces. Yet the colour palette, the posture and setting of the figures portrayed convey a state of rebellion against dogmatic notions of femininity that subsist today. The figures appear in motion,… no longer defined by their marble stasis, while the imagery of laser beams and disco balls transmits a sense of urgency, almost a declaration of war enunciated from an angel’s horn. Pera’s representation of the body substantiates the feminine subjectivity, by irrevocably eliciting personal responses to its appearance. The marble statues, no longer static and upright, acquire body, flesh and movement. The figures take ownership of their own physicality evacuating the enfant from the femme.
« The purpose of art allows for a celebration of the creative aspects of the human spirit, expressing the beauty of wonder and freedom as well as instilling insight to the viewer. »
Caroline Pera is a prize-winning French-American painter based in Milan, trained at Central Saint Martins, London. Her work has entered the private collections of Etro, Loro Piana and financier Claudio Costamagna, and has exhibited internationally across Milan, London, Vienna, New York, and Birmingham. Collections including her signature 'Flow' series, inspired by Lao Tzu's philosophy of effortless becoming, Pera's paintings invite the viewer into a deeply personal yet universally resonant world. Her work explores the layered terrain of human emotion, exploring the tension between surrender and intention. Created in oil on the finest linen - left bare to reveal its natural texture and warmth - each painting captures organic forms in a state of perpetual becoming: never fixed, never still. Bold yet delicate. Available to collectors worldwide.
