Jean-Michel Basquiat

Basquiat's market is defined by two facts: he made a huge body of unique work but very few prints in his lifetime, and no catalogue raisonné or active authentication body now exists, as the Estate's committee was disbanded in 2012. That makes documentation everything, whatever the medium. His paintings sell at the very top of the contemporary market and are largely institutionally held, so for private collectors an original most often means a drawing or unique work on paper, where provenance (gallery invoices, exhibition history, an unbroken ownership chain) is the whole basis of confidence. His prints split cleanly: the scarce lifetime works (the 1982 Anatomy screenprints and a few 1983 editions) are hand-signed, while almost everything else is a posthumous edition signed by the artist's sisters and published through Pace Prints and Flatiron Editions. Because forgers have faked estate and committee stamps, buyers verify publisher records, paper and numbering rather than trusting a mark. For a Neo-Expressionist this heavily forged, that paper trail is non-negotiable, so we work with specialist galleries that handle authentication, and every Basquiat work on Singulart is sold with documented provenance and a certificate of authenticity.
