M Kennedy Volcofsky is a self-taught visual artist working almost exclusively on paper. Paper's fragility - and its connection to writing and the book - offers the creative act's inherent violence a voice - in tears, rips, uneven surfaces, holes - retaining the reality of chance and im/permanence of memory - so the truth of aliveness has its say in what remains - even *as* remains – and what otherwise might be error or defect becomes – essence. Embodying tensions of desire, both abstract and recognizable. Hopefully the work - what is seen - also looks back and so has a quality - beyond the visible - of a call.
Volcofsky - a multi-modal artist, makes work for stage, page, and screen as well. Here, it's the image that does not move - beyond what the word can say.
