Max Uhlig

About Max Uhlig

Max Uhlig is a German artist and professor whose distinctive style lies between abstract and representational art. Uhlig primarily paints portraits and landscapes using his signature motif of dramatic, dense, and dark lines. He was born in Dresden, Germany in 1937 and studied fine arts under Hans Theo Richter and Max Schwimmer.

Starting out as a graphic artist, Uhlig studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts followed by the German Academy of Arts in Berlin as a masters student, developing his unique style. Line and form are his main tools that define his semi abstract portraits: frenzies of ink or paint that add dramatic rhythm to the human form. His former training as a calligrapher and his intensive studies of Asian ink painting can be seen throughout his unmistakable style. With dynamic brushstrokes, Uhlig intensely portrays his subject, sometimes spending months or even years deciding on the right medium.  He experiments with different paper types and tools, from oil and india ink, to watercolor and etching. In 1968, Uhlig collaborated with Carlfriedrich Claus on his first lithographs and with other German artists on their prints.

In 2018, Uhlig donated his entire collection of paintings to the Cultural Foundation of the German state of Saxony. This collection includes 15,214 works of all genres and printing blocks dating back to the late 1950s up until the present. He also gifted the foundation his house and studio in Dresden to host international artist residencies.
