« I investigate landscape as psychological space—the gap between where our bodies are in beautiful coastal places and where our wandering minds travel. »
Nicola Newman is an Australian artist whose paintings explore landscapes, with particular focus on coastal environments encountered while sailing Australia's east coast. Working primarily in oils, she moves fluidly between representation and abstraction, exploring atmospheric transitions—the way light, weather, and coastal conditions create fleeting moments between states. Since 2008, she has paired her paintings with personal diary excerpts as titles, revealing an interior monologue running parallel to the visual experience of landscape.
Newman holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from Queensland College of Art, Griffith University (2005) and has exhibited nationally and internationally since 2002. Her work is held in public collections including Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery and private collections across Australia and internationally.
