About this artwork
A metal sculpture depicting a stylized mermaid, seated introspectively on a large fishhook emerging from the base. Her elongated body and serpentine tail elegantly coil around the vertical axis, while her composed expression and the tilt of her head convey stillness and reflection.
The contrast between the delicacy of the figure and the symbolism of the fishhook—an object associated with capture and danger—introduces a conceptual tension: beauty… and threat, freedom and trap. It fuses the mythical with the mechanical in a piece imbued with poetry and ambiguity.

Adriel Rodríguez Echazabal is a Cuban sculptor, trained at the Matanzas Professional School of Visual Arts, who works primarily with recycled metal and machine parts. His sculptures combine the mechanical and the organic, evoking steampunk aesthetics and exploring welding techniques as a form of “drawing” in space. Through his art, he conveys the power of transformation, the capacity to rediscover beauty and dignity in the discarded, and awakens in the viewer a profound reflection on the constant possibility of renewal and creative freedom.
