About this artwork
My work blends elements of contemporary romanticism and neo-pop with a reinterpretation of the Eastern aesthetics found in literati painting—where silence, emptiness, and poetic space hold meaning. The girl who appears in my paintings serves as a bridge between my past and present self, while the boy reflects another facet of my persona, often inspired by the image of my son.
In terms of technique, I build color through the repeated layering of thin,… delicate washes. These transparent layers create a sense of depth and atmosphere that differs from the density of paint applied in a single, heavy stroke. Perhaps because of this, people often remark that my paintings resemble works created on traditional Korean paper, hanji.
Through these figures and natural motifs flowers, insects, and other small creatures I aim to evoke the quiet coexistence of human beings and nature, and to deliver subtle, flowing emotional resonances that invite stillness and reflection.
Ahyoung Ryu is a painter with a rich background in Western painting, drawing inspiration from her mother's artistry and academic training in fine arts. She employs delicate, multilayered washes to create luminous works that blend contemporary romanticism, neo-pop, and Eastern literati aesthetics, often featuring children in quiet communion with nature. Her art reflects on innocence, lost connections, and the gentle coexistence between humanity and the natural world. Ryu’s paintings evoke comfort, peace, and a wistful longing, inviting viewers to rediscover the child within and embrace the quiet beauty of simple, sincere relationships.
