About this artwork

at 6 by 8 feet, this is a monumental ocean painting and one that the artist has worked on intermittently for several years. the work is both immersive and robust due to its scale. that said, the overall impression is quietly meditative and transformative. it is a dense work with numerous skeins of washy layers and glazes, reminiscent of paintings by Whistler and Turner. The loose brushwork also recalls late works by Monet and the overarching symmetry/geometric… thrust of the painting is not unrelated to compositional strategies explored by Mark Rothko. These are all artists that Weinstein has a great affection for and he does consider these paintings to be in a lineage of those and other painters whose work investigates the notion of the sublime.
