About this artwork
This artwork was painted in a garden in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the end of my second trip to the United States, after two months spent on the Navajo Nation exploring the sacred legends of the horse among the Dinéh people. During the process, taking the time to discover what was emerging, I recognized Ash, with his unique way of observing me. Ash is a young wild stallion from the reservation, captured and kept in a corral, whose needs I met daily… with water and hay, and with whom I had a few approach sessions, under the watchful eye of the medicine man who had welcomed me.
Alexandra Bergmans uses painting, drawing, photography, and video dance, drawing on her solid training at the Beaux-Arts in Nancy and her experience as an equestrian artist. She blends sketchbook exploration, observational drawing, and performance, enriching her transdisciplinary style with dance and the lightness of riding. Through the profound bond she shares with horses, her work conveys a unique energy, composed of power, grace, and intimate emotion, inviting viewers to experience the freedom and communion between woman and animal.
