Shadows
Steps: agile, like an athlete's, slowed by the weight of packages, punctuated by thin heels, supported by a cane, swift in a confident stride... Shots that capture individuals in motion, or rather, a portion of them: in this series of photographs, the viewer sees not the entire figure, but only the legs or feet. There is no way to establish the identity of the characters, who can be defined according to general typologies such as "man,"… "woman," "elderly person," "child"—and the partiality of vision is not the only factor contributing to this uncertainty: the main factor is that these are photographs of shadows. These images depict a city scene that is not unfamiliar but certainly less common, not lifeless but rarely visited, from a perspective that immediately generates a sense of estrangement in the viewer: prejudice, the traditional identification of shadows as a negative element, insinuates itself uncontrollably.
