About this artwork
In Burst, I explore the moment when contained energy can no longer remain hidden. Through layered, fragmented strokes, I build a surface that feels both structured and unstable, as if countless forces are pressing against one another before breaking free.
I was drawn to the tension between darkness and light, opacity and transparency. Deep violets and shadowed passages hold the composition together, while flashes of pale tones and metallic warmth… emerge unexpectedly, creating moments of release and illumination. For me, these contrasts reflect the way emotions, thoughts, and experiences accumulate beneath the surface until they find expression.
Rather than depicting a specific event, Burst is about a state of becoming—a surge of energy, insight, or feeling that reshapes what came before. It captures the instant when restraint gives way to movement, and complexity resolves itself into a new
Alisa Shirkhanyan is a self-taught contemporary painter from Armenia whose work is devoted to abstraction and the expressive potential of color. Working primarily in oil, she creates atmospheric compositions through intuitive layering, textural experimentation, and a responsive creative process. Her paintings explore the space between emotion and perception, where color, gesture, and form become a language beyond words. Guided by intuition rather than fixed narratives, she develops works that invite contemplation, personal reflection, and emotional connection. Through luminous layers and dynamic surfaces, Alisa seeks to evoke subtle transformations, moments of stillness, and the beauty of the unseen. Her practice is driven by a continual exploration of new techniques, allowing each painting to emerge organically and develop its own visual voice.
