About this artwork
An intricate field of layered color and form unfolds with a quiet, inward rhythm. Created through a combination of painting and collage/décollage, the surface is both structured and intuitive—each tear guided, yet open to chance. This balance allows fragments to settle into a natural visual harmony.
Soft tones of lavender, muted blue, pale yellow, and earthy neutrals interact with deeper passages, forming a gentle yet dynamic color field. The composition… evokes an imagined landscape—not of a place, but of a state of being—where forms drift and quietly connect.
Edges feel discovered rather than imposed, as if revealed through time. Within this layered structure, an abstract imagery world emerges, suggesting subtle movement, presence, and quiet relationships.
The painting invites stillness—a sense of peace that is deeply held. Here, beauty arises not from perfection, but from the acceptance of irregularity, offering a calm, authentic presence.
The eye catches what the mind cannot: a beauty born of irregularity, sensed beneath language, beyond the edge of awareness.
Alistair is an internationally recognized artist. Inspired by the torn layers of subway posters, Alistair developed a unique technique that combines painting with collage and décollage. Rather than using pre-decorated materials as in conventional collage or décollage, he works with layers of blank paper on canvas, painting directly onto them with textured brushstrokes and color. These painted layers are then unpredictably combined through processes of collage and décollage, creating a dynamic and integrated surface.
Rooted primarily in painting, this approach has also expanded toward more figurative subjects and reflections on historical tragedies. Through this process, time becomes an additional dimension within the work.
