About this artwork
"On tenderhooks" is a play on words. In German, there is the expression "auf heißen Kohlen sitzen" (to sit on hot coals), which describes the restless moment of tense anticipation of something.
I come from the Ruhr area and grew up there in a time when the air was still dirty and the "pulse of steel," as Herbert Grönemeyer sings in his song "Bochum." As an apprentice at Krupp, I was given tours of the steelworks in Duisburg-Rheinhausen, saw the… molten metal flowing in rivers, and watched the men proudly working and sweating.
I was there only once, a memory seared into my memory in orange, yellow and black, day and night.
The steelworks no longer exists. Everything was dismantled, the entire plant, every single screw, was exported (I think to Russia or Asia, I'm not sure) and rebuilt abroad.
The colors of glowing iron and steel are long gone in the Ruhr area. Now it's green there.
