About this artwork
"Broken Wings" is a deeply emotional and dramatic abstract painting through which I aimed to evoke the helplessness of a self-taught artist. Let me share with you a rather unpleasant experience I had. When I first started painting abstract works, I participated in various online competitions and exhibitions, mainly in the US. I won a few awards that honored me and gave me a sense of validation.
I greatly desired to have a physical exhibition, but… in my city, there weren't many options. So, I went to the only gallery where I hoped to gain permission to exhibit at least one piece in a collective exhibition. They asked me directly, in a way that felt invasive, if I had studied the arts or if I intended to do so. I told the lady that I hadn't and had no intention to. The gallery owner wasn't present, so I had to return.
When I came back, we talked briefly, and he suggested I send my portfolio to an email address. I never received a response.
