This drawing depicts a British one pound coin, focusing on its engraved details and bimetallic surfaces. I studied the coin closely, noting the ridges, engravings, and signs of wear, and photographed it for reference.
I started with a graphite outline to ensure the shape and proportions were precise. Using coloured pencils, I layered tones to recreate the metal’s texture and the coin’s raised text and engraved motifs. These I emphasised through… careful shading and highlights, while for the surrounding flat surface I showed subtle texture and wear, creating a realistic contrast between relief and background. To achieve these effects I have used different colour pencil brands for details, blending or sharp lines, depending on the soft or hard core of the pencil.
The finished work emphasises the coin’s material presence, including scratches and discolouration, showing the physical details often missed in everyday handling.
