About this artwork
Brooksby paints contemporary scenes of the city and these scenes change quickly.
This painting is of a Parisian cafe that was on the corner of Rue Saint Jacques and Boulevard de Port Royal. Since Angie painted it the place has been renovated and the Tabac store sold. The sign is no longer there. The couple embracing in the window is typical of what you see in Paris. The Parisians don't seem to be bothered with curtains.
The neon Tabac Carotte signs… was one of the things that fascinated her when whe first moved to Paris. The Tabac signs are disappearing quickly. These signs represent a carrotte of chewing tabacco because that is the original format of tabacco when it first arrived in Paris. Often these neon signs are spiraled neon tubes as tall as 3 meters. These have been replaced with LED carrots and in the end plain flat signage.
When Brooksby painted the hidden couple embracing in the window above the cafe she had in mind the play A Street Car Named Desire.
Angie Brooksby is an internationally renowned American artist who has lived in Europe since 1988. A recipient of numerous prizes and scholarships, including those awarded by U.S. senators, she holds a BFA in Sculpture from the prestigious Maryland Institute College of Art, where she studied under John Shan. Her artistic education continued at S.A.C.I. and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, Italy.
Though classically trained in figurative sculpture and painting, Brooksby has shifted her focus to abstract works inspired by the flora and architecture of the French Riviera. Her paintings aim to capture and radiate light, transforming the wall into an expanded, luminous space. To obtain the most light she uses mixes, classical painting techniques with spray paint, collage and gold leaf.
After 21 years in Tuscany, 15 years in Paris, she is based on the French Riviera.. Her atelier gallery, Nouvelle Galerie Massillon, is located in the historic center of Hyères.
