A vintage wooden duck toy sits with an air of nostalgia on top of an antique movie reel in Ann’s playful juxtapose Filmed Fantasy. Ducks are a reoccurring theme throughout Ann’s portfolio of work, featuring often in her juxtaposes as well as her mosaics. Having worked for many years in an island studio, she grew fond of them; they represent both her ongoing concern for our environment and love of nature. Ann calls her sculptures “juxtaposes”; she… creates them by combining objects that don’t ordinarily go together, and in an unexpected way. They show her sense of humour and eccentric way of looking at society. They tell a story that each viewer may interpret in his or her own way. To create these works, Ann scours antique shops, antique fairs and auction houses to collect decadent ornaments, bone china, objet d’art, curios and quirky objects. She then juxtaposes two or three ‘objet’ together. The name of each piece takes even longer to decide on and is as important as the work itself.
« My life is like a mosaic, composed of little fragments of memories, traditions and family histories. Yet despite all this, my heart sings in a quiet whisper. »
Ann Bubis, a painter and sculptor from the United Kingdom, has exhibited in Germany, Czechia, the United States and the U.K. As an intuitive artist, her abstract and realistic pieces are a response to global issues concerning the environment and ‘throw-away society’, as well as ancestral history, to name a few. Bubis works comprise varying styles and media, with her current focus on framed mosaics and sculptures which she calls ‘juxtapositions’.
