About this artwork
Ann’s framed abstract painting Sea of Bark is oil on an acrylic inked background. The patterns that emerge from long waving vertical brushstrokes are inspired by observation of different tree barks as Ann tried to understand the complex structures of this protective layer that evolves over time. Popping out from the abstracted background Ann has depicted the more realistic shapes of plant growth. As in her In the “Rhythmscape Requiem” series, Ann…
is inspired by the Japanese term “Kami” meaning “energy generating a thing”. It exists in nature, rivers, places and people. Similarly, there is energy in the bark of this tree. Ann wishes to hypnotise viewers through her work, so they become more aware of rhythms and patterns around them.

Ann Bubis, a painter and sculptor from the United Kingdom, has exhibited in Germany, Czechia, the United States and the U.K. As an intuitive artist, her abstract and realistic pieces are a response to global issues concerning the environment and ‘throw-away society’, as well as ancestral history, to name a few.
