About this artwork
When painting this place, my interest wasn't merely in reproducing a monument, but in capturing the emotional weight it projects. The large cross that crowns the mountain becomes a silent axis, almost suspended against a golden background that doesn't strive for realism, but rather symbolism: a space where time seems to stand still. This gold envelops the scene with a solemn, almost liturgical light, transforming the architecture into something more… internal than physical.
The empty, vast, and cold esplanade functions as a threshold. There are no human figures because I want the viewer to occupy that space, to decide how to approach the basilica and what it represents. The trees on either side frame the composition as if they were ancient witnesses, detached from history yet present within it.
« The work must explain itself. A work that needs to be explained is not worth much. »
Antonio Fellini is an accomplished Spanish figurative painter with national exhibitions. His work reflects a profound inspiration and influence from the Classical Masters. His primary themes include landscape, religion, and portraiture. Antonio Fellini's interest in art began in the world of comics, a medium that shaped his youth and of which he still has a valuable collection. Although his current focus has shifted away from comics, the influence of those early influences can be detected in his current works. Trained under the tutelage of prominent nationally renowned painters such as Manuel Huertas, his works are part of collections in Spain, Germany, and the United States.
