When the low and gloomy sky weighs like a lid
on the spirit that groans in the grip of a long boredom
and embracing the circle of the whole horizon
it pours a black light sadder than the nights;
when the earth turns into a damp cavern
where Hope, like a bat
he goes beating the walls with his timid wing
and beats his head on sodden ceilings;
when the rain spreading out immense streaks
imitates the bars of a vast prison
and a silent people… of infamous spiders
at the bottom of our brains it stretches its nets,
Suddenly bells snap with fury
and let out a hideous scream towards the sky
like wandering and homeless spirits
that they start to groan stubbornly.
And long hearses, without drums or music,
they pass slowly inside my soul; the hope,
conquered, weeps, and atrocious, despotic Anguish,
he plants his black banner on my bent skull. (Baudelaire)
