About this artwork
In this painting, I draw inspiration from the hand-pulled rickshaws of my city, Kolkata — both as a chronicle of a fast-disappearing vehicle and as a metaphor for resilience, the spirit of moving forward against all odds. I chose to highlight the wheels, letting them dominate the canvas as symbols of endurance and the cyclical passage of time.
Done in semi abstract style, I worked with earthy ochres and terracotta as the foundation, layering bold… reds with striking turquoise highlights to bring contrast and energy and also add a touch of modern elements. Using the palette knife, I built textured surfaces that echo the grit of the streets and the struggle carried within the rickshaw’s story.
For me, this piece is not only about capturing a fading cultural icon, but also about evoking the timeless attitude of perseverance and momentum.
« Art transforms the mundane to the extraordinary. »
